1. What is Shoresearch?

Shoresearch is an exciting surveying and recording scheme which is run by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. The project will help to identify the habitats and wildlife that exist along our coastline – an excellent way to understand and help protect our local shores.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Shoresearch offers a one-day course aimed at giving volunteers basic skills in seashore identification and recording. At the end of the course you should be able to complete the shoresearch form and start recording!

2. Why do we need Shoresearch?

Our shorelines are critical to the local marine environment, playing host to many different species of wildlife and plants. More must be done to help understand, manage and conserve these fascinating habitats.

The Shoresearch programme will collect data that is suitable for input into the National Marine Recorder Database. It will also be used to build knowledge of our local marine environment and ultimately help to:

  • Raise awareness of the importance of our coastline
  • Develop strategies to help conserve and protect the shore
  • Identify the county’s most important habitats and species
  • Establish any potential areas of local interest of conflict

3. Shoresearch History

Shoresearch was developed by Kent Wildlife Trust and is now being taken on by all the Wildlife Trusts in the South East. It has similar aims to Seasearch but instead focuses on the intertidal rather than subtidal so there is no need to even get wet!

4. Shoresearch and monitoring

Surveys are scheduled for the following dates: to be confirmed

The beaches that will be focused on for 2007/2008 include the following:

(a) Hampshire - Keyhaven and Lymington, Lepe Country Park, Calshot, Hythe Hard, Netley, Royal Victoria Contry Park, Hamble Foreshore, Warsash and Lee on Solent.
(b) Hampshire - Hillhead, Stokes Bay, Eastney, Gunner Point, Farlington Marshes, Hayling Island and Sandy Point.
(c) Isle of Wight - Freshwater Bay Ledges, Hanover Point, Shanklin Ledges, Bembridge ledges Ryde and East Cowes

5. Shoresearch reporting form

If visiting these areas, you can send data to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust by downloading and returning a shoresearch form.
