Working with Dog Walkers
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust manage our nature reserves for the benefit of wildlife and we would like to thank all of our visitors that take care when walking on our nature reserves. We have been working hard to engage with the dog walking community, in particular those that visit our nature reserves with their dog. In 2010 we launched a new project "Dogs on Reserves". The project has involved piloting a range of initiatives aimed at improving our relationship with visitors to our sites and encouraging them to act responsibly on our nature reserves so that local wildlife can thrive.
What are we doing?
New signs have been produced to ensure that we are giving clear, concise messages to dog walkers on our nature reserves and
informative flyers have been designed and distributed on our sites. ‘Dog friendly’ guided walks have also been organised at some of our reserves in order to teach visitors how to reduce the disturbance to wildlife and livestock when walking their dog on our nature reserve and above all, how to have a safe, enjoyable wildlife walk.
Get involved
You can find out more about how to enjoy the countryside responsibly with your dog by visiting our information page, dowloading the flyers on each of the reserves pages and looking out for new signage on our nature reserves. If you have any queries or comments about the project, please contact Natalie Rogers, Wildlife Information Officer natalier@hwt.org.uk. You can also join us at one of the dog walk events below or volunteer as a dog walker ambassador.
