WildLine Question of the Month

How can I help wildlife in my garden this winter?
Our gardens are a vitally important habitat and can be home to a whole host of species. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust can provide information on how to can create homes for and encourage wildlife into your garden. Some of our top tips for turning your garden into a wildlife haven include; putting up a bird box, digging a pond, creating a log pile and building a compost heap.

As winter approaches, you can help hibernating mammals and other garden visitors by not being as tidy in your garden throughout the colder months and providing a range of tasty treats for them to fatten up on in the weeks leading up to the hibernation period. Rake up your leaves into a pile but don’t collect them up, don’t turn your compost, stack up your winter cuttings in a shady corner and put out chopped nuts, muesli or meat leftovers to make your garden a haven for hibernation. If you are lucky enough to have species hibernating in your garden, please remember to keep disturbance to a minimum.
