Wildlife Conservation

Water Vole by Chris Bean

Community Conservation

The Loddon and Eversley Heritage Area possesses a wealth of wildlife in a wide variety of different habitats.

The area is rich in biodiversity, containing a matrix of important habitats such as chalk rivers, ancient woodlands, fens, dry acid grassland and heathland. The rivers of the Loddon valley rise near Basingstoke and flow through a landscape rich in wetlands, woods and heaths on their way to join the Thames. Many of the sites they pass through have either statutory or non statutory designations for the wildlife they support.

Many of the species found in the area are under threat from loss of habitat or competition from introduced species. The water vole, for example, has suffered greatly from predation by the introduced american mink. The project works to help protect and enhance the valuable habitats and wildlife found in the area through working with local communities and landowners.

Loddon and Eversley Survey Projects

Water Vole Surveys

Striped Lychnis Larval Survey

If you would like to get involved with wildlife conservation in the area why not join a local conservation group, help out a work party at one of our reserves or help us with our survey projects? Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust has lots of volunteering opportunities available in all aspects of our work.

Why not visit one of our nature reserves in the area? As well as Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust there are a number of other organisations that have reserves in the area.

Land Management Advice

The Loddon & Eversley Project aims to promote greater understanding of the countryside, its heritage, landscape, agriculture and wildlife. Advice is available to help landowners manage their land in a way that is both profitable and sympathetic to wildlife. We offer free advice to farmers, landowners, community groups and SINC owners in the area.
