Water Vole Surveys
We know that there are water voles still present in the Loddon catchment. However, the exact status of water voles in the area is not known because some information is out of date and some areas have not been surveyed.
Over the last few years, we have been surveying the rivers and ditch systems within the Loddon catchment.
The aim of the surveys is to try to collate information on the distribution of water voles (Arvicola amphibius) within the Loddon and Eversley Heritage Area. Water voles used to be a common sight on many of our waterways. However, they have declined drastically in numbers and are now one of the UK's most threatened species. Their decline is due to a number of factors including habitat loss and predation by non-native American mink (Mustela vison).
By identifying the presence of water voles, we can advise landowners on how to manage habitats sympathetically.
