North East Reserves Team NERT
We meet usually every Wednesday between 10:00 – 15:30 (roughly), and carry out a range of practical conservation tasks on a variety of sites in the Fleet and Hook area going South as far as Noar Hill and Longmoor. No experience is necessary, full training and all equipment is provided. All that is required is enthusiasm and an interest in wildlife and the countryside.
You’ll need to bring:
- Old clothes, that you don’t mind getting muddy
- Water proofs (just in case)
- Sturdy footwear
- Lunch
- A cold drink
- A flask with a hot drink inside
For further details please call Keith Blackmore on 07770 918372 or email keithb@hwt.org.uk
Some of the work parties take place on MOD training areas, and may be subject to cancellation at short notice. Please let Keith know that you wish to attend so he can contact you if this is the case.
Work Parties January- March 2012
February 22nd
Site – Yateley Common
Task- Clearing and burning birch and pine scrub
Meeting Place- Woodside. From the A30/B3272 roundabout take Bloomsbury Way and immediately turn right into Woodside.
Grid Ref. SU 844 592 Post Code- GU17 9JG
The site isn’t yet grazed so we’ll help keep the encroaching scrub in check and as some of the gorse is quite ‘leggy’ and of diminishing habitat value we’ll give it a trim.
The Road to the parking is quite deeply pot-holed so please drive carefully.
(The 22nd will probably be on the other end of the Common but we’ll discuss this nearer the time).
February 29th
Site – Weavers Down Bog
Task – Scrub clearance and site tidying
Meeting Place- Cotman’s Corner, between A327 and Greywell
Grid Ref. SU724 524 Post Code- RG29 1HG
We’ll take the minibus and possibly also use the truck depending on numbers to visit this fascinating bit of bog with some real botanical gems. It is near Longmoor so some might like to make their own way there but we’ll sort this out nearer the time. Wellies will be needed. Great way to use a Leap Day!
March 7th
Site- Noar Hill
Task- Egg hunt!
Meeting Place- Cotman’s Corner, between A327 and Greywell
Grid Ref. SU724 524 Post Code- RG29 1HG
We’ll take the minibus and possibly also use the truck depending on numbers for a return to this wonderful reserve. We’ll search the Blackthorn for eggs of the Brown Hairstreak Butterfly. They are rather small so don’t forget your specs!
March 14th and 21st
Site – Pondtail Heath
Task - Birch and pine removal
Meeting place – At the end of Pondtail Road, Fleet, but please park with consideration to the local residents.
Grid reference – SU 827 540 Nearest postcode GU51 3JH.
We’ll be working on the Gelvert fence line clearing back leggy Gorse (Hurrah!) and possibly replacing a few fence posts to get us back into fencing mode for the summer season. Possibly our last fires so lets have a sausage sizzle!
March 28th
Site – Bassets Mead
Task – Fence repairs
Meeting Place – Meet by the electricity pylon on Doctor’s Acre in the Housing development (Holt Park).
Grid reference – SU 736 544 Postcode RG27 9UX
We’ll be flexible but with birds nesting we’ll be limited in the work we can do.
The above programme is a draft and we might have to change tasks around a bit but hopefully it gives a flavour of the second half of the scrub cutting season work.
P.S. We’d like an extra day on Long Valley to really make an impact so we’ll discuss it and see if some of you might be able to help us out, probably in the week of the 8th February, to take advantage of the hot embers It is I know a big ask and fully understand why it might be a request too far. I’ll bring a cake though!
