Physical access plan
Being close to the city centre Winnall Moors is well placed to provide a fully accessible countryside experience, yet the previous infrastructure and information about the reserve limited access for a wide range of visitors, such as those with low mobility. There was also a perception among some people that the overgrown entrances and paths conveyed an uninvited feeling.
The Trust has been able to draw upon its experience delivering high-quality access and interpretation projects on other reserves to address these issues. Click on the following to learn more:
Entrances
The reserve entrances, notably the Durngate entrance, have undergone a complete overhaul. Following recommendations from a public consultation the entrances and the approach onto the reserve are now more obvious, accessible and visually appealing.
Volunteers have played an important part helping to make the Durngate entrance more eye-catching and welcoming. A large wall of encroaching scrub was cleared, as well as numerous bags of rubbish, reflecting a long-term public misuse of the area. Wild flower turf was laid in its place, while contractors removed some encroaching trees to improve the views onto the reserve. The most notable addition has been the striking Durngate Archway.
