Photo Competition
Since the photograph competition was launched in last winter's magazine the Trust has received over 300 entries, not just from Trust members and residents of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight but from all over Britain.
It became obvious over time that choosing the winners was not going to be an easy task, there are some incredibly talented amateur photographers among you and the standard of entry was very high. The initial short-listing for each category was carried out by a panel of staff with the final winners being chosen by professional photographer David Kilbey.
Wonderful Wildlife and Overall Winner
This was a very well represented category, but one photograph really stood out ‘Fox in the Forest' by Alex Haimes from Blackfield.
Alex's charming portrait of a fox was felt by David to be of a ‘very high standard' and ‘could easily be imagined on the front of a magazine', for this reason Alex not only wins his category but also 1st place overall.
The Macro category and 2nd place overall
This was one of the most fiercely contested groups but Jeanette Harrison's of Dibden Purlieu’s 'Hang on Tight', an amazing close up of a grasshopper, really stood out from the crowd with rich colours and incredible sharpness. These qualities also gives Jeanette's photograph 2nd place overall.
Under 16 and People & Wildlife Categories
‘Wormy' was taken by 10 year old Hester Barker of Nutbourne, West Sussex. Hester's picture was chosen for both categories as it was felt that it illustrated discovery, inspiration and education three key points of the Trust's Strategic Plan.
Trust Reserve and 3rd overall winner
‘Brent Geese' was taken by Ken Gillam at Farlington Marshes. The photograph was chosen because to capture birds in flight is hard enough but to capture them with such clarity is quite a feat.
Local Environment and 3rd overall winner
The photograph of a Black Redstart taken by Kevin Crisp from Portsmouth, is pictured amongst litter washed up on our shoreline. It is not only a beautiful, well captured picture but also highlights just one of the difficulties that the wildlife and wild places of Hampshire and the Island face.
Runner’s up
Wonderful Wildlife: Chris Bean, Farnborough and Ian Pratt, Sandown.
Under 16: Bradley Ralph, Bordon and Bethany Hancock, Aldershot.
Trust Reserves: Linda Priestley, West End and Roger Betteridge, Romsey.
Local Environement: Nick Hawkins, Basingstoke and Alex Haimes, Blackfield.
Macro: Mark Heighes, Poole and Liam Marsh, Basingstoke.
A Highly Commended was given to Paul Blackley, Totland for his picture of a flying Barn Owl.
