Newt Survey 2010
A big thanks to those of you that took part in the garden pond newt survey and to volunteers from Kitbridge Enterprises Trust who surveyed ponds for newts in West Wight. Distribution maps have been prepared for great crested newt, smooth newt, palmate newt, frog and toads. For great crested newt, only a total of 6 sites were confirmed for the island, all of these in North or West Wight. Frog populations seem to be healthy and were recorded in 23 out of 36 grid squares in West Wight. Toads were recorded in 28 out of 36 grid squares. Palmate newts in 16 grid squares and smooth newts in 18 grid squares.
During 2011 the project is planning to create new ponds in locations where they will help to bolster great crested newt populations.
