Formal Education on the Isle of Wight
Whether you’re investigating the rocky shore, the wild flowers and butterflies of the downland or spotting red squirrels in our woodlands, the Island offers a variety of habitats within easy reach.
Pre-schools, Schools and Colleges
Our Education Officer is available to visit schools to give talks about the work of the Wildlife Trust on the Island. We are also able to provide
-
advice and practical help on improving school grounds for wildlife;
-
habitat awareness in school grounds, eg pond dipping, minibeast safaris;
-
guided walks using Wildlife Trust reserves, Wight Nature Fund reserves, Parkhurst Forest and the public footpath network;
-
outdoor activities for pre-school children;
-
INSET days for school and pre-school staff;
-
practical experience with onsite training for young people undertaking countryside courses.
Forest School
Forest School provides children with an outdoor classroom where they can learn through practical activities throughout the year, such as using tools to make things from wood, campfire cooking and shelter building. The programme helps children to become independent learners, raises self confidence and self esteem and improves problem solving skills. With support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, our trained Forest School Leader is available to run programmes for schools in their own grounds or woodland sites around the Island.
Farm Visits
Our Education Officer has undertaken training under the Access to Farms scheme and is able to arrange school visits to local farms.
