Marine Conservation

Find out about News and Events

Dahlia anemone by Paul NaylorAs you look out from the beach it is sometimes hard to imagine anything living beneath the grey waves. Yet our seas around Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are home to some wonderful creatures including the colourful dahlia anemone, the magical seahorse and the beautiful cuckoo wrasse. And that’s not all; did you know that we have some of the best examples in the country of golden-green meadows of seagrasses and some of the richest areas for skates and rays?

But our marine environment is subjected to a barrage of potential threats and human impacts like climate change, fishing and dredging. So we set up a marine conservation programme to help protect these seldom-seen inhabitants of the underwater world.

Our main activities are:-

  • Marine events and awareness raising
  • Investigating our local marine life through training volunteers in our Shoresearch and Seasearch programmes
  • Contributing to the Marine Conservation Society's Adopt-A-Beach Project by organising beach cleans throughout the year
  • Working to protect important marine habitats like seagrass
  • Campaigning and lobbying for greater protection for our marine environment (BUT, please see below)

To get involved contact the Marine Officer Amy Dale on AmyD@hwt.org.uk
