Grassland creatures

Grasshopper by Phil Mclean The Meadow Grasshopper grows up to two cm long. The adult grasshoppers can be seen between July and November. As with all grass hoppers, Meadow Grasshoppers are herbivores (plant eaters).
Marbled white Butterfly The Marbled White butterfly can be seen flying over grassland during July. Its favourite flowers are thistles, knapweed and other purple flowers. The caterpillars like to eat Red Fescue, which is a kind of grass.
Ants' nest by Bob Chapman Ants are insects that live in colonies. They build ant hills; mounds in which the ant colony can live and breed. Ants are a very important food source for the Green Woodpecker.
