Chalkstream Invertebrates Project - the Species

Southern damselfly

  • Southern damselfly by Ben RushbrookDragonflies and damselflies are arguably the most charismatic and beautiful insects associated with freshwater habitats such as rivers, streams, lakes and ponds.
  • The southern damselfly is one of a number of small blue and black damselflies found in the UK.
  • The southern damselfly is a nationally and internationally threatened species, but the habitats here in Hampshire support two nationally important strongholds for this species.
  • For more information on the identification of southern damselfly, their biology, habitats and the threats they face please download our southern damselfly factsheet.

White-clawed Crayfish

  • Crayfish are similar in appearance to lobsters, but are smaller and live in freshwater habitats such as rivers, streams and lakes.Whiteclawed crayfish by Ben Rushbrook
  • The white-clawed crayfish is the only species of crayfish native to the UK and is nationally and internationally threatened.
  • A number of non-native species of crayfish, most notably the american signal crayfish, have been accidently or deliberately introduced into the UK and are a major threat to the survival of white-clawed crayfish.
  • For more information on the identification of white-clawed crayfish, their biology, habitats and the threats they face please download our white-clawed crayfish factsheet.Signal crayfish by Chas Spradbery
