Catchment Sensitive Farming
From October 2009, with support from Natural England and the Environment Agency, the Wildlife Trust on the Island is delivering a new service to Island farmers. IW Catchment Sensitive Farming is a project to help farmers take practical steps to avoid releasing pollution, such as fertilisers and pesticides, into rivers and streams. High profile incidents have led to problems with the quality of the Island's watercourses which are used by people and wildlife alike.
This project aims to help farmers bring environmentally friendly practices into the Island's farming industry, in line with the Eco-Island principles, and to benefit the farmer by reducing losses of expensive chemicals and valuable top soil.
Working with farmers and landowners, the ultimate aim is to promote a living landscape where the special character of the Island's wildlife can thrive to benefit both the rural economy and the environment.
