We Still Need Your Mammal Records!

Help us to build a complete, current picture of mammal distribution across Hampshire by recording every time you see a mammal in the county, and submitting it to the County Mammal Recorder.

Email HMGRecorder@hwt.org.uk with the following information:

  • Hampshire Mammal Group recording cardYour name, the date and time of day you saw the mammal.
  • The precise location of the mammal (include a post code and also a grid reference if possible, e.g. SU123456).
  • The species seen (use the scientific name if known).
  • Additional details e.g. alive/dead, number of individuals etc will also be useful.

If you have lots of records to send in, why not download our electronic species recording form  and guidance notes  and e-mail it in to HMGRecorder@hwt.org.uk. As an alternative, you may prefer our Word version available here for download.  This may be returned electronically or by post to the Trust at Beechcroft addressed to HMG Recorder.

Mammal of the moment

Stoats and Weasels

stoatWeasels---Brian-Kilford

Do you know which is which? Although the two mammals are very similar there are some key differences to note. A stoat is bigger than a weasel, averaging 24-31cm (head and body length - HBL) whereas weasels are only 17-21cm HBL. The stoat will always have a distinctive black tip to the tail, whereas the weasel will not; the weasel's tail is also shorter. Finally, the coat of the stoat is generally a darker red/brown shade, while the weasel's is more of a ginger to russet tone, with a very undulating border between this fur and the creamy fur of the belly.

Do you know which is which now? The picture on the left is of course a stoat (Mustela erminea) and on the right is of two weasels (Mustela nivalis).

If you see a stoat or weasel or any sign of their activity or presence, please send the record into us at hmgrecorder@hwt.org.uk along with any other mammal records you have, as usual.
