River Avon gets source to sea protection to wipe out non native plant species
A new three-county project will stem the spread of non-native invasive plants throughout the River Avon and its tributaries to protect the future of their native wildlife. According to those involved, nothing on this scale has been tried before in the UK.

In May 1912, a month after the Titanic sank, Charles Rothschild held a meeting to discuss his radical idea about saving places for nature. This meeting led to the formation of the Society for the Promotion of Nature Reserves, which would become the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts. It signalled the beginning of UK nature conservation as we know it.

Walk the River Anton Way
The River Anton Way is a newly completed way marked walk that follows the route of the River Anton as it passes through the centre of Andover. The idea was to make the river more accessible, whilst highlighting its conservation value. Information is provided through interpretation boards, showing the improvements that have been made through the project, and the wildlife that they have helped to benefit.

Rare fungus ‘morphs’ into Olympic Torch
Back in 2010, just before the start of the football World Cup, keen-eyed conservationists in Hampshire celebrated the first sighting in England of a rare fungus - Multiclavula vernalis. Despite the difference in size, it’s similarity to the World Cup did not go unnoticed!
And now it’s back, and with perfect timing, appears to have ‘morphed’ into a miniature version of the Olympic Torch.
South Downs success in Nature Improvement Area competition
A £3 million plan to safeguard endangered chalk downland in the South Downs National Park has been awarded £608,000 by the Secretary of State for the Environment.
