SE Nature Notes w/e August 20th

Ospreys have been appearing all this week at various coastal sites.

Portsmouth & Portsdown

Single whinchats and garganey, 28 greenshanks and 3 whimbrels were at Farlington Marshes on 15th. 
A flock of terns fishing off the Naval Base on 15th included at least one roseate tern.
Single wheatear  and redstarts were on Portchester Common on 17th.
On 20th there were 6 wheatears, 17 yellow wagtails, 29 greenshanks, 19 knot, 3 whinchats and a spotted redshank at Farlington Marshes.
Tegenaria gigantea house spiders have shown up in Portsdown and Havant houses this week.

Havant hayling & Emsworth

A Rowlands Castle garden has recently been visited by chiffchaff, garden warbler, blackcaps and a whitethroat.
On 15th a volucella pellucens hoverfly was reported on water mint at Brook Meadow Emsworth.
Birds at Sandy Point on 15th included 2 whinchats, 14 sand martins, 5 wheatears, 2 reed warblers, yellow wagtails and a redstart.  On 19th there were 17 yellow wagtails, 2 tree pipits and 2 redstarts.
A large pattern winged Tipula maxima crane fly was in a Havant house on 17th.
A cattle egret was still on Thorney Island on 19th.  On 19th a kingfisher was at the east end of the Great Deeps and a wasp spider somewhere on the island.
Also on 19th there were wheatears, linnets and a whinchat on the Sinah golf course fence.
A giant puffball  was found in the Northney area on 19th.
At Mill Rythe Hayling Island on 20th 3 yellow wagtails and single redstart, wheatear and common sandpipers were seen.
A spotted flycatcher was seen at Northney on 21st.  Other birds present included whimbrel, dunlin, common and lesser whitethroat, redstart, blackcap, garden warbler, wheatear, whinchat and yellow wagtails.
Havant area flowers this week include green amaranth, common fumitory, sun spurge and small nettle west of Northney church; dwarf mallow by Langstone bridge and skullcap at Lumley (Emsworth).

Fareham and Gosport

In addition to the plants listed at Portchester last week   the very rare sand lucerne is in flower.
A marsh harrier flew over Whitedell Lane N. Fareham on 18th.
Corn cockle, cornflower and apple of Peru are in flower where contractors have been working on the Lee on the Solent promenade.
Two bearded tits flew over Hill Head on 20th.

Waterlooville and South Downs

A clouded yellow butterfly was at Old Winchester Hill on 15th.  On 20th 3 firecrests and 15 tree pipits were recorded by one observer.
On the same day a Clanfield sparrowhawk was chased into a tree by hirundines.
