Hedgehog suprise!

I thought you may be interested in a surprise experience I had this morning. Yesterday, as I weeded and trained up my sweet peas close to my conservatory, I was horrified to see a large rat come toward me from my right as I knelt down weeding the plants. The rat passed rapidly under me between the conservatory wall and flowering sweet peas. It disappeared either into a surface drain or into a hole in my wooden garage. I decided it best to investigate the garage in which there are masses of things for a car boot sale or for a visit to the dump! On lifting a large plastic sheet at the rear of the garage, I thought I had discovered and disturbed a large round rat or mouse nest. The autumn leaves and other material of which it was made began to vibrate then move more readily. Instead of seeing a rat or mice emerge, to my great delight and surprise I discovered it was a hedgehogs nest. I saw 5 little ones plus Mum. I hurriedly got the digital camera and took these photos before replacing the large sheet of plastic over them. What a thrill.
