River Anton Photographic Competition

8 July 2010

With the sun shining and holidays around the corner, there is no better time to get out and about in the local area. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust have launched a photographic competition on the River Anton, Andover as part of the River Anton Enhancement Strategy.

This is a partnership project between Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, Test Valley Borough Council and the Environment Agency to restore and improve sections of the river both for wildlife and people. The River Anton is one of our forgotten chalk rivers, a tributary of the internationally renowned River Test, it has suffered in the past from engineering and modifications to accommodate various human requirements, such as powering mills.

As well as restoring sections of river and carrying out several species surveys to monitor the success of works carried out; the project also aims to raise awareness of the River Anton within the local community, so that people understand the pressures it is under, and the wonderful wildlife that it still supports.

This is your chance to show us what is special to you about the River Anton.

There are 4 categories:

  • Wildlife on the Anton- Flora and fauna found on the Anton. Macro photographs could be included here.
  • Community- People enjoying the River Anton, whether it be walking, fishing on one of the lakes, or just soaking up the surroundings on a summers day.
  • Riverscapes- Capturing the river as a whole- anything from the serenity as the River Anton passes through Rooksbury Mill, to the hustle and bustle as it passes through the town centre.
  • Young Photographers (16 and under)- For the budding young photographer. Photos can be linked to any of the above categories.

The competition is free to enter, and open to all amateur photographers. There are prizes to be won, including Gift cards for Jessops, Digital photo frames, Canvas prints, and Wildlife photography books.

The closing date of the competition is Friday 1st October 2010. Winning entries will be picked by a panel including professional wildlife photographer Dennis Bright, and the winners announced at the River Anton Project Update event at the Lights, Andover, on the evening of the 27th October 2010.
