Roydon Woods - Wood Fair and Local Produce Market

27 May 2010

Action at Roydon Woods Woodfair

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust will be holding the 3rd annual Wood Fair on Sunday June 6th, 11am - 4pm at Roydon Woods - one of our nature reserves in the New Forest National Park, between Brockenhurst and Lymington. The aim of the day is to inspire people about the value of woodlands for wildlife as well as showing their importance as a source of wood for local wood workers.

The woods are comprised of ancient woodland, heath and meadows and are a wonderful back drop to this fantastic free event, suitable for all the family.

A major attraction on the day will be the opportunity to watch logs being extracted from the woodland by traditional methods.  Bob - a cob horse will be pulling logs harvested from the wood and the logs will then be cut on a mobile band saw.  When Bob is not pulling logs there will be the chance to meet him and his owner.

Many local wood workers will be showing off their skills. There will be wood craft demonstrations including wood turning, wood lathes, cleaving oak, hurdle making, making charcoal, wooden toys, besom brooms and walking sticks.  There will also be an opportunity for adults to have a go at some of the wood crafts. Some of the crafts people will be allowing visitors to try their hand at the activities.

There is also plenty for the younger visitors to do.  Children can: make a wooden pendant, draw with some Roydon Wood charcoal, make willow sculptures and wands, as well as making a bird box.  There will also be story telling and woodland adventure sessions for the children.  Both adults and children will be able to view a host of woodland moths, dissect owl pellets and join us for guided walks in the woods.

Another major aim of the day is to help promote the produce of members of the New Forest Marque.  The New Forest Marque® was created to provide a recognized sign that is easily identified and ensures that all produce is from the New Forest.

Over a dozen New Forest Marque producers will be attending and selling their produce. Products range from: cakes, bread, meat, ice cream, strawberries, honey, biscuits and jams to woollen products, soap, and roasting planks!

Entry to the event is free, though donations are always welcome.

If you would like to attend the event take the A337 south out of Brockenhurst towards Lymington past the Filly Inn on your left. Take the next left turn sign posted to Boldre Church (the sign is quite small). You are now in Sandy Down; drive along Sandy Down for approximately 0.5 of a mile the entrance to the site is on your left and will be sign posted.

We look forward to seeing you at the event.  For further information visit the web site http://www.hwt.org.uk/ or contact Joanne Gore on 02380 424205
