SE Nature Notes for w/e Jan 16th.

Portsmouth & Portsdown

A bittern stopped briefly at Farlington on 8th before flying west.  On 9th there were 2 pale bellied Brent geese in the large flocks on the marshes.
A ladybird was seen flying outside a window on a Portsmouth tower block on 9th.
On 11th the highest number of purple sandpipers so far this year, 13, was seen at Southsea Castle.
A Dartford warbler was by the lake at Farlington Marshes on 15th.
On Sunday 17th up to 31 avocets and 7 bearded tits (right) were seen at Farlington Marshes.  There was also a barnacle goose with the Brents and a greenshank in the eastern corner of the reserve.
A black redstart has been present all week at Whitcombe Gardens Fratton.
Most of the fieldfares have gone but there were still over 80 in North Portsmouth on 17th.

Havant hayling & Emsworth

There were 3 Slavonian grebes in Langstone Harbour on 9th and 4 at the entrance to Chichester Harbour on 14th.  The flock of black-necked grebes  in the harbour had 20 birds but the next day there were just 13.
The oyster beds green-winged teal was still around on 14th and the 2 long-tailed ducks were still in the north of the harbour on 10th.
Also on 10th there was a firecrest near the Sinah gravel pit.  Another was on the Billy Trail in Havant on 14th.
A weasel was seen close to a house by the Billy Trail at Langstone on 10th.
A barn owl was present at the oyster beds on 10th and at the western edge of the Nore barn copse on 11th.
Woodcock
were seen on S. Hayling on 11th, at Sinah, and 13th at Sandy Point.
On 14th a hen harrier flew towards the Thorney Deeps from the Chidham direction.
A kingfisher was at Peter Pond Emsworth on 14th.
On 15th there were around 40 fieldfares, 600 redwings and 4 mistle thrushes on the West Lane fields.  There were more fieldfares on the Warblington fields with a few on the nearby beach.
There were 111 coots in Emsworth Harbour on 16th.  The Nore Barn spotted redshank was still present.
On January 17th a buzzard spent some time eating prey on the ground at the Budds Farm sewage works.  A single rock pipit  was on the South Moors shore that day.

Fareham and Gosport

Between 10 and 12 woodlarks were in the Bridgemary area of Gosport on 10th January.
A bittern flew east over Portchester on 13th.
Around 500 black-tailed godwits were at Titchfield Haven on 16th.
A Dartford warbler was at Browndown on Sunday 17th.
The white Canada goose is back in the flock at Titchfield.
