SE Nature Notes for w/e 24th October

Portsmouth & Portsdown

Three goldeneye ducks were in Portsmouth Harbour on 15th October.
There was a late tree pipit and a whinchat (left) on Farlington Marshes  on 17th.
There were 30 sanderlings on the Eastney shore on Friday.
On the same day a Mediterranean gull was seen at the IBM North harbour site.

Havant hayling & Emsworth

A black brant goose was seen in the Thorney Island area on 17th.
On the same day there were 10 red-breasted mergansers in Langstone Harbour and 5 in the mouth of Chichester Harbour.
Three knot were in the Emsworth channel on 17th and 5 in Emsworth Harbour on 20th.
The first report of tufted ducks this winter from the Emsworth Mill Pond came on 17th October.
On 18th a mallard with 4 newly hatched chicks was at Mill Rythe Hayling Island.
October 20th brought a firecrest  to Sandy Point on 20th and 2 to Gunner Point Hayling Island.  On 22nd there were over 1000 goldfinches at Sandy Point.
Eleven Sandwich terns seen in the south of Langstone Harbour on 19th and 3 off Broadmarsh on 21st are probably going to be here through the winter.
The ‘tame' spotted redshank was back in the outfall of the stream at Maisemore Gardens on 21st.  A bird of this species colour ringed at Thorney in 2008 was seen in Sweden shortly before appearing again at Thorney Island on June 25th.
Two rock pipits were off the South Moors shore on 22nd and 3 more at Nutbourne on 23rd.  There was also a stonechat at South Moors on 22nd.
Also at Nutbourne a  red Japanese rose was in flower on the sea wall.  Narrow-leaved ragwort is in flower in nearby Farm Lane.  A cluster of Stropharia coronilla fungi was also seen in this area.
At South Moors yellow iris had a surprising flower.  Fungi present in the area included field mushrooms, shaggy inkcaps and Leucoagaricus leucothites.
A red-necked grebe was reported to be on the sea between Northney and Warblington on October 22nd.  Four black-necked grebes were seen from the Broadmarsh slipway on 21st.
At least 75 ladybirds were seeking hibernation sites in a Havant house on 23rd.
Early dog violets are in flower in a Havant garden.
An olive-backed pipit was on the Sandy Point Hayling Island reserve on 24th October.

Fareham and Gosport

For the 7th consecutive winter a ring-billed gull is back on the Cockle Pond at Walpole Lake in Gosport. 
A yellow-browed warbler was at Titchfield Haven on 17th October.
On 19th 4 siskins flew over Fareham town centre early in the morning and in late afternoon a grey wagtail  (right) was outside the Argos store.
A black brant goose was giving great views at the Hardway Gosport on Saturday morning
