SE Nature Notes for w/e 12th September

Portsmouth & Portsdown

There were 2 avocets at Farlington Marshes on 8th September.

A new brood of red admirals is on the wing including one on Portsdown on 13th.

Havant hayling & Emsworth

A wigeon was on the Budds Farm pools on September 6th.  There was also a possible sighting of the so-called ‘fudge' hybrid duck this week.  On 8th there were 2 pochards present.
A marsh harrier was hunting over the saltings east of Thorney Island on 6th and a male was over Langstone Harbour on 7th.  Ospreys were reported from Thorney on 6th, 7th and 10th(2); Langstone Harbour on 7th and 8th, Portsmouth Harbour on 8th and Mill Rythe on 12th.
Also on Thorney Island on 6th there was a water rail in the reeds by the Little Deeps, a kingfisher on the ‘canal' and over 70 sanderlings and 20 bar-tailed godwits on Pilsey Island.
A flock of 47 great-crested grebes was in the Chalkdock area of Langstone Harbour on 8th.  A kingfisher  was seen on the Brockhampton Stream.
A yellow and black spotted 22 spot ladybird was photographed at Brook Meadow this week.
The trees along paths on Bridge Farm Northney have been host this week to up to 8 spotted flycatchers, 4 pied flycatchers, 2 redstarts, common and lesser whitethroats, willow warblers, blackcaps, a reed warbler, yellow and pied wagtails.  Overhead a raven  was seen.
A red-throated diver and a juvenile shag in breeding plumage were off Sandy Point on September 9th.
On September 9th a little grebe was an unexpected sight on the Slipper Pond at Emsworth.
Six species of Glasswort (Salicornia spp.) were found at the Oyster Beds and Northney.  There was also a small populations of Slender Hare's-ear (Bupleurum tenuissimum) at Northney and Mengeham and a good stand of Wood Small-reed (Calamagrostis epigejos) at Northney.
The trees at Langstone Pond were crowded with little egrets in the afternoon of September 10th.
A flock of 20 avocets was seen off Longmere Point Thorney Island (just south of the Great Deeps).
An eclipse drake garganey was on the Sinah gravel pits from 11th to 13th at least.
A Cetti's warbler was at Sandy Point on 12th.
Three ravens flew over Sinah Common on 12th.
Common ramping fumitory was noted at the New Lane allotments this week.
A young hedgehog has been a regular visitor to a Leigh Park garden up to 12th at least.

Fareham and Gosport

A black-throated diver flew west past Hill Head on September 8th.
A huge flock of around 900 Canadian Geese was seen over Titchfield Haven on September 12th.
On the same day a flock of over 150 yellow wagtails came to roost in the reeds at the Haven.

Waterlooville and South Downs

More than 50 red-legged partridges were seen near Old Winchester Hill on September 12th.
On the same day a tree sparrow was seen east of Old Winchester Hill at Chidden.
